5th January 2015

Welcome back and a very Happy New Year to you all. Please see below the Welcome letter for our new unit and what we will be covering this term. It would be great if you take the time to share this with your child and discuss with them what they think we might be learning about. As our unit is all about Communities, we would really appreciate if any of you would like to come into class and tell us a little bit about your job and how you contribute to the community. Please email us if you would be interested in coming into class, we can work around a time that suits you.

Thank you.

11/12/14

11th December 2014

The final week before the winter vacation is always filled with extra activities outside the normal routines. Next week is no exception for Grade 1. Below is a few details of the week’s plan to help you prepare your child for the change’s accordingly.

Wednesday 17th December
Obviously, the school concert is on Wednesday. The children will not be going home before the show. This means that they will need lunch and an extra snack packed in their bags. It should also be noted that the children will be walking to the Asker Kulterhus, so please make sure their backpack is one they can carry on their own. Regarding costumes, the children will need to wear the following:
Trees: Green top and brown/black trousers
Trolls: All black (can make a tail)
Family: Jeans and lumberjack style top

Thursday 18th December
Unless we have really icy conditions underfoot, we plan to visit the forest behind the school for some outside fun in the snow. Please make sure your child is wearing a woolen underlayer on that day and dress appropriately.

Friday 19th December
School finishes at 12:30 on Friday, as is the last day before the Winter vacation. We will be having a ‘celebration party’ from 11:30 - 12:30. If you would like to provide any traditional celebratory food for the classes to share, please email to let us know. The food and/or drinks can be brought in on Friday morning. At 12:15 we invite parents to join us for the end of the party to give the opportunity for the children to show you their classroom and the learning that has taken place during this semester. From 12:30, it is dismissal time and we encourage all parents to clean out their child’s locker with them. We will not be walking the children out for collection on this day, so you will need to come into the school and collect them. SFO will be running as normal. If you need to make arrangements, please do so through the school office.

Regards,

Mr Brent & Miss Angie

10th November 2014

Please see below the Welcome to Unit letter for Unit 3 and the information letter regarding the 'Celebration Box' project that your children need to complete at home during this unit.

Unit 3 - How we express ourselves

Dear parents,

For our next unit of inquiry, the children will be required to complete a research project at home. As you know our new unit is all about Celebrations. For this project, the children will need to choose one celebration and create a ‘Celebration box’ all about their chosen celebration. The children will need to research to find out facts about their celebration and then using this information create their box. We suggest that they use a shoe box and include in it any things that they think tell us about their celebration. They can draw pictures, print pictures, make objects, write labels and include written facts all about their celebration.

The children will need to bring their ‘Celebration box’ into school on Monday the 8th of December. During that week of school, they will share their box with the class.

Important facts you could find out are:
  1. Who celebrates the celebration?
  2. When is it celebrated?
  3. What do people eat during this celebration?
  4. Do they wear any special clothing?
  5. How do people celebrate this celebration?
  6. What are they celebrating?
  7. Why is this celebration important?
  8. Do other cultures celebrate the celebration differently?

List of possible celebrations:
  • Birthdays
  • Diwali
  • Eid al Fitr
  • Christmas
  • Saint Lucia
  • Easter
  • Halloween
  • Chinese New Year
  • Weddings
  • New Year
  • May 17th
  • Bonfire Night
  • Other

This is simply a guideline, please feel free to add other information or resources to the box that are relevant. This is an independent project where individual creativity and thinking is encouraged. If you have any queries regarding this project, please do not hesitate to email us.

Best wishes,

Angie and Brent (Grade 1 Teachers)

07/10/2014

Dear Grade 1 parents,

Please be reminded that tomorrow is the scheduled day for parent meetings. If you would like re-confirmation of your time, please let me know and I will respond as soon as possible. Please try your best to be on time as meetings will be kept strictly to 10 minutes.

On Thursday 16th October, the students will be enjoying a trip to the Folkemuseum in Oslo. We would like to request some parent assistance for this event. The bus from school will be leaving shortly after 9:00 and returning at approximately 14:30. As seats on the bus are limited we are only able to take a select number of parents, with the first one’s to respond chosen first. If you are available to help on this day, please let us know if you are able to drive a car and meet us in Oslo, if all seats on the buses are taken.

Thank you and kind regards,

Miss Angie & Mr Brent
